Day 2: Schools of the Future

Of course:

GRATITUDE and LOVE

Day 1: Schools of the Future Conference

Depth was a focus today: Interesting conversations, adult learning reflections and techie sharings.  I'm struggling with a wondering that never goes away:

How can we invite and include our public kids and educators more consistently?

And a final reflection:

Computers cause frustration, isolation, stress and discord UNLESS we are purposely choosing to use them with intention for collaboration to create, problem solve or recreate with empathy and compassion.

July 30: First Day of School Year 2012-2013

It was a bit of a paradox beginning the new school year in the smack middle of summer.  It felt like the hottest day of the year to boot.  Nonetheless we begin the routines anew. (Is this another paradox?)

Focusing on gratitude, I choose to thank the self-respecting homeroom teachers.  You do the work of heroes.  HIDOE teachers reported back to duty for two days of which one allowed for teacher prep time.  The next two days were furloughed.  And then, it was Monday and all students and parents showed up eager to meet the new year.  Thank you homeroom teachers, you are miracle workers.

Self Directed Learner within HIDOE (Hawaii Department of Education)

IF we engage the GLOs we can engage the individual...AND we must go to Project Based Learning, letting the child lead the learning.  A child centered classroom is respectful in all communications.  Public school has been in existence for approximately 200 years.

GLOs:
  • Self-directed Learner (The ability to be responsible for one's own learning)
  • Community Contributor (The understanding that it is essential for human beings to work together)
  • Complex Thinker (The ability to demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving)
  • Quality Producer (The ability to recognize and produce quality performance and quality products)
  • Effective Communicator (The ability to communicate effectively)
  • Effective and Ethical User of Technology (The ability to use a variety of technologies effectively and ethically)
